2013 – community

fireworks

2014?  Wow.  What a year it has been.  As I sit here thinking back over the year, I can’t help but see the hand of the Lord orchestrating every adventure, every connection, every accomplishment, every story, and every friendship.

If I had to choose a word for 2013, I would have to pick “community”.  I’ve been wishing and praying to be part of a close-knit community of fellow believers for years.  And this year, the Lord answered that prayer above and beyond my dreams.  I’m now part of two communities and each has blessed my life tremendously.  One consists of several families that we get to see multiple times throughout the week for various activities and functions.  From our weekly Bible study and worship time to co-op, Ultimate Frisbee, and English Country Dancing — many times I get to see these people three times in one week.  And because of this consistency, we’ve all grown into a family.  I now have a bunch of adopted “aunts, uncles, and cousins”.  😉 And it has been great.

The second community is an online community of fellow College Plus students.  These are some seriously awesome people.  And I was able to spend two amazing weeks with many of them.  Making memories together deepens and cements friendships like nothing else.  Definitely highlights of the year.

Hello St. Louis from College Plus!

Hello St. Louis from College Plus!

we have had the time of our lives / now the page is turned / the stories we will write / we have had the time of our lives /and i will not forget the faces left behind / it’s hard to walk away from the best of days / but if it has to end / i’m glad you have been my friend / in the time of our lives

In all honesty, I  have no idea what all 2014 is going to bring.  I have a few goals, but I’m not holding on to them too tightly.  Who knows what the Lord has planned?  But whatever it is, it’s going to have to be pretty fabulous to top 2013.  Regardless of what He sends my way, I want to live gratefully, fully, and with special attention to the small things in life.  This is a special time of life and I want to take full advantage of it.

and i’ll taste every moment and live it out loud / i know this is the time, this is the time to be / more than a name or a face in the crowd / i know this is the time, this is the time of my life

Happy New Year, my friends! 😀

Becoming a Graduate

The past month has been pretty crazy — hence the lack of blog posts.  😀  Saturday, May 12th, was my high school graduation.  A total of 31 homeschool seniors joined together to celebrate this beginning of a new season of life.

Our area’s homeschool support organization hosts a personal graduation ceremony for interested high school seniors.  This year, there were five music presentations and two speeches given by some of the graduates.  One of the dads, who is also a pastor, gave a charge to the graduates.  And when it came time to present the diplomas, the parents did the honors with tears, hugs, and joy.

My amazingly wonderful parents began homeschooling me in Kindergarten.  At first, we weren’t sure whether or not we would continue.  But the successes of each year spurned us on to the next.  By 3rd grade, we were committed to the homeschooling method.  Then somewhere around 6th grade, homeschooling through high school was a given.  And those four years have been simply amazing.

To name a few of the opportunities that the Lord has given me, I’ve been the webmaster for the local chapter of the ESA National Homeschool Honor Society, I helped found an online literary club,  I’ve taken British Literature, Shakespeare, and three years of Latin from a wonderful Scottish lady, I’ve joined an English Country Dance group, and I’ve started college.  And along the way, the Lord has blessed us with many friends.

But most important of all, I’ve grown close to my family.  We’ve had some amazing adventures and made wonderful memories.  And as my mom and I have been reminding each other — this is only the beginning of the adventure.

Becoming: a college student

On February 13th, I officially became a college student.  After two weeks of studying, I passed the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP test and recieved 6 credits for my work.

After driving an hour to the college, running around campus getting the parking pass, finding the right room, signing in, forgetting to my receipt , running back to get it, finishing signing in, forgetting to lock up my purse, taking the test, I walked out to the car with a big smile on my face and six credits to my name.  The Lord blessed me with not only a passing score, but a very high score!

Now I’m tackling Principles of Macroeconomics.

Becoming: Thankful

humming bird breezes, first cup of coffee, yellow butterfly dances

I am reading a book for the second time.  No big deal — I love re-reading my favorite books, three, four, five, six times!  But I’m not re-reading this book just to enjoy it again.  It’s the type of book that every time I read it, I uncover a jewel missed before.  I am reading it again to digest it more fully.  One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp challenges readers to pause and record 1,000 blessings given from the Lord.

We are forever reminded of 1st Thessalonians 5:16-18 — Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.  This is easy to view as a very difficult — no, impossible — charge.  But in every thing that comes our way, there is something to be thankful for.  It is our job to find it.  And as Mrs. Ann says —  praying with eyes wide open is the only way to pray without ceasing.  And with our eyes wide open, we will discover the thousands of gifts the Lord has given us.

How often do we see the little things, the moments overlooked in the rush of life?  How often do we thank Him for the moon shadows, the hummingbird breezes, the sunlight lying dappled on the notebook?  Pausing to notice, savor, and record these precious, brief moments  — it slows the mess of life.

I am trying to train myself to hunt for these gifts and to lift up thanks to Him from whom all blessings flow.
